My mission: I help teachers and parents help teenagers. This week I went back to research I commissioned some time ago — hundreds of international studies on how teenagers think and on the state of education. I call it The Gap Report. Reading it again was disturbing. But also super interesting. Not because the world is ending. Because the gap is real. It shines a bright light on the gaps in our education system - and it hurts the eyes! And it shows how hard it is for teens to prepare for a future they did not design. These teenagers walking among us — little zombies one minute, delightful angels the next — are not what we were. If you’re Gen X like me, you already feel it. They are finely tuned instruments, not hammers or spanners. The sensitivity we complain about is the instrument. It still needs calibration. They are the ones who will have to change the world. The report is too much for one sitting. I’ll unpack it in short chapters, then in podcasts and videos. I’ll make the document available. It is a bit of a silly project But I thought it was so interesting that a loooooooong spoon could fascinate someone like myself so much that I wrote a whole book about it! Hi Reader "Uh-Oh, the Principal wants to see you!" I was in trouble three times this week. The 3rd one I might not share at all (too risky?) But here's number 1:I absolutely lost my temper at a boy in my school who simply refuses to cut his hair. What do I do? The Mom is permissive - "He said we should wait until aaaaafter the Matric Dance" she said. So tell me - hit reply and please tell me - what do I do?
